There were numerous organisations that were anti-tour across New Zealand and internationally. Many came under the larger organisation of HART, established by John Minto. It included localised groups that organised protests in their centres as well as combined forces in an effort to draw attention to the issue of the Springbok tour going ahead. Halt All Racist Tours (HART), was a group established in 1969 by John Minto, Dick Cuthbert, Trevor Richards and various others who shared the purpose to protest against tours with South Africa on the grounds they bid not believe in the racist policies put in place by the South African government. HART protested against the proposed 1973 tour and continued to express their disapproval in South Africa’s apartheid policies.
In 1973, HART made it clear that they would take to the streets in protest if the proposed Springbok tour of New Zealand went ahead. HART warned the government again, and when they were ignored in 1981 protests broke out in which thousands of New Zealanders took part, invading pitches, organising rallies and spreading their belief that the tour should not go ahead. HART was not the head of the 1981 protests, but members and leaders of HART played key roles in organising thousands of New Zealanders to take part in protests against the government’s decision.
